Thuringian Minister-President Mario Voigt of the CDU has publicly criticized AfD co-leader Alice Weidel, accusing her of lacking patriotism following a recent televised interview.
Voigt’s remarks, made during an appearance on the “Welt” television channel, stemmed from Weidel’s response during an ARD interview when asked to identify three positive aspects of Germany. Voigt stated that her inability to provide an answer suggested a lack of patriotic sentiment and a dismissive view of the nation’s value.
The Minister-President also expressed frustration regarding disruptions that occurred during the Weidel interview, arguing that they served to distract from a critical examination of the AfD’s policies. He suggested the disruptions may have inadvertently benefited Weidel’s image and ultimately undermined the cause of those who interrupted. Voigt emphasized the importance of addressing the AfD’s proposals directly, highlighting what he perceives as a lack of concrete plans for the country’s future.
Concluding his critique, Voigt asserted that the AfD represents a decline for Germany, contrasting it with the region’s rich cultural heritage – Thuringia boasts the highest density of UNESCO World Heritage sites in Europe – and a high level of volunteer engagement. He also pointed to Germany’s position as a European leader in innovation, with the highest number of patent applications. Voigt directed his remarks at Weidel, suggesting her failure to acknowledge these achievements demonstrates a lack of courage.
