Patient Advocate Calls for Improvements

The Federal Government’s Patient Advocate, Stefan Schwartze, is calling for improvements to the newly implemented electronic patient record (ePA) system. Concerns are being raised by citizens experiencing difficulties setting up and accessing their ePA, often stemming from incompatible smartphones or other access-related issues.

Since its introduction in April, the ePA system has faced criticism regarding its limited adoption rate and perceived technical barriers. Schwartze emphasized the need for a redesigned approach, prioritizing user-friendliness and accessibility for all age groups. “The ePA must become more application- and patient-oriented” he stated. A key focus will be ensuring straightforward access to personal data, with clear and easily understandable information regarding how data is stored and processed.

The Advocate highlighted the importance of presenting data in layman’s terms, ensuring every individual can comprehend the content of their own electronic record. He stressed the necessity of incorporating patient feedback throughout the development and testing phases, ensuring a continuous consideration of the patient perspective. Despite the current challenges, Schwartze maintains a positive outlook regarding the long-term potential of the ePA to significantly enhance patient care and empower individuals to manage their health information.
