Germany’s Energy Minister for Saxony-Anhalt, Armin Willingmann, has advocated for an increased construction of overhead power lines to accelerate the expansion of the nation’s electricity grid. In an interview with “Rheinische Post” Willingmann stated that a faster pace of grid development is crucial to avoid hindering the growth of renewable energy sources.
He highlighted the potential advantages of prioritizing overhead lines, including significantly faster construction timelines and reduced costs. Transmission network operators estimate savings of up to 20 billion euros could be achieved. The construction of projects could be shortened by approximately one year on average. Willingmann emphasized that a swift and effective grid expansion will ultimately lower costs for consumers through network charges.
The Minister also cautioned against potential adverse effects stemming from a planned energy transition monitoring initiative proposed by Federal Minister for Economic Affairs, Katarina Reiche. While adjustments to specific aspects of the grid development plan may be acceptable, a comprehensive revision could create substantial uncertainty and raise political concerns. Willingmann drew attention to past instances where economic forecasts regarding energy demand have proven inaccurate, leading to delays in the energy transition.
