Berlin Pride: Massive Police Deployment Expected

Berlin authorities are bracing for a significant security operation during this year’s Christopher Street Day (CSD) celebrations, anticipating a heightened level of complexity compared to previous years. According to Benjamin Jendro, spokesperson for the Berlin state association of the Police Union, the upcoming event necessitates addressing security concerns that were previously less prominent.

Reflecting broader safety considerations arising from recent acts of violence, Jendro emphasized the implementation of measures such as vehicle barrier protection – a standard feature at large public gatherings. He also highlighted an increasing pattern of targeted violence against the LGBTQ+ community, noting incidents perpetrated by both individual actors and organized groups, including those traveling to Berlin specifically for such actions. This necessitates vigilant monitoring of gatherings near the main CSD events.

While the Berlin Police stated that they currently have no specific intelligence regarding threats from right-wing extremist groups, they affirmed their preparations are focused on ensuring a peaceful event. They stressed a continuous assessment of potential risks and implementation of appropriate measures accordingly.

A counter-demonstration by right-wing extremists has been registered for the Schöneberger Ufer area, with organizers expecting around 400 participants. The police will deploy approximately 1,300 officers, supported by riot police units from other federal states, to manage the event and maintain public safety.
