US stock markets displayed a cautious performance on Monday, exhibiting fluctuating trends throughout the trading session. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 44,837 points, reflecting a decrease of 0.1% compared to the previous day’s close.
Earlier in the session, the broader S&P 500 edged slightly into positive territory, reaching approximately 6,390 points. The Nasdaq 100 saw a more pronounced gain, rising 0.3% to around 23,355 points.
A trade agreement reached between the EU and the US over the weekend initially provided a boost to Wall Street, offering a degree of reassurance that further escalation in trade disputes might be averted. However, a generally cautious sentiment ahead of a week filled with corporate earnings reports subsequently tempered those gains.
The euro weakened considerably on Monday evening, trading at $1.1591, a decline of 1.45% against the US dollar. Consequently, the dollar was valued at €0.8627.
Gold prices also demonstrated weakness, falling to $3,317 per fine ounce, a decrease of 0.6%. This equated to a price of €92.01 per gram.
Conversely, the oil price saw a significant increase. Brent crude, a benchmark for North Sea oil, closed at $70.38 per barrel, representing a rise of 2.8% compared to the previous trading day’s closing figure.
