A Firm Stance

The leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) parliamentary group, Jens Spahn, has again dismissed calls for sanctions against Israel, asserting such measures would be counterproductive and detrimental to Germany. In an interview with the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” Spahn questioned the practical implications of sanctioning Israel, highlighting the potential for discriminatory practices.

He emphasized that disrupting trade agreements or scientific collaborations would ultimately harm Germany’s own interests. Spahn pointed to Israel’s significant role as a hub for technology and startups, noting Germany also purchases military equipment from the nation. Consequently, he stated that blanket sanctions against the entire country are unrealistic.

Germany has faced internal pressure within the European Union for its reluctance to join a sanctions package targeting the Israeli government in response to the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip. Spahn defended Germany’s position, stating that the nation possesses a “special relationship” with Israel, differentiating it from other EU member states like France, the United Kingdom and Australia. He maintained it is acceptable for Germany to adopt a distinct stance on the matter.
