Concerns are mounting regarding growing resistance to tourists in several popular destinations, according to Anja Karliczek, Chair of the German Bundestag’s Tourism Committee. In an interview with the “Rheinische Post” Karliczek expressed worry over the increasing reservations shown towards visitors in certain areas.
While acknowledging the legitimate anxieties of local residents regarding issues such as affordable housing and the strain on infrastructure in heavily visited recreational and vacation regions, Karliczek emphasized the significant economic contributions of the tourism sector. She highlighted tourism’s ability to generate economic value, facilitate social mobility and provide revenue that can be reinvested in essential local infrastructure.
Karliczek, formerly Germany’s Minister of Education and Research, stated her intention to act as a mediator between the tourism industry and affected communities. As Chair of the Tourism Committee, she committed to fostering dialogue and finding solutions to address local concerns.
Recent demonstrations against tourists, notably on the Balearic island of Mallorca, have intensified the debate surrounding the impact of tourism on local communities and highlight the need for constructive engagement.
