A Growing Rift?

Sahra Wagenknecht, founder of the newly formed political movement “Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht” (BSW), has publicly criticized the Alternative for Germany (AfD) regarding its relationship with former U.S. President Donald Trump. In remarks made to the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland, Wagenknecht accused the AfD of misleading its own voter base through its alignment with Trump.

The criticism specifically references a recent shift in Trump’s policy towards Ukraine. Wagenknecht argued that the AfD has similarly deceived voters, particularly in eastern Germany, who were drawn to the party’s perceived commitment to peace. She highlighted that many voters support the AfD due to their desire for a peaceful foreign policy.

Wagenknecht questioned the AfD’s past enthusiasm for Trump’s achievement of a five percent electoral threshold and its consistent avoidance of criticizing his policies. She asserted that, in light of recent developments, the AfD is “no more a peace party than Donald Trump is a peace president.

The BSW leader called for a substantive engagement with the AfD, noting its increasingly close alignment with the political stances of Friedrich Merz, leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), as Trump’s foreign policy converges with that of his predecessor, Joe Biden. Wagenknecht declared that BSW is “the only peace party in Germany”.
