A Growing Threat?

Germany’s State Minister for Culture and Media, Wolfram Weimer, has expressed concern over a rising tide of attacks targeting cultural institutions and practices within the country. In an interview with the “Rheinische Post” Weimer highlighted a growing pressure exerted from both right-wing and left-wing perspectives impacting the cultural sector.

He attributed this phenomenon to a wider global trend, noting that a prevailing sentiment currently appears to be moving against the ideals of freedom. Weimer specifically cited authoritarian tendencies emerging from various sources, including right-wing and left-wing factions, Islamist groups, as well as regimes in countries like China and Russia, all of which are influencing the national discourse.

The Minister emphasized the importance of maintaining a space for moderate viewpoints within German society, asserting that cultural policy plays a vital role in achieving this. He stated unequivocally that such attacks would not be tolerated.

Furthermore, Weimer voiced deep concern over the increasing prevalence of antisemitism within German society, echoing a trend observed in other areas. He underscored that antisemitism has no place in Germany and is central to his understanding of cultural policy.
