The Social Democratic Party (SPD) in Germany has expressed cautious optimism regarding the Gaza peace plan proposed by former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Adis Ahmetovic, the SPD’s spokesperson for foreign policy within the Bundestag, told the “Tagesspiegel” newspaper that the plan offers a potentially discernible path towards a diplomatic resolution. He highlighted the possibility of alleviating the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, securing the release of hostages and the demilitarization of Hamas.
Ahmetovic stressed the importance of all parties adhering to international law and prior agreements. Specifically, he emphasized that “there must be no annexation of the West Bank.
Acknowledging past disappointments, Ahmetovic cautioned that “skepticism is unfortunately justified given the experiences of recent months”. He underscored the need for continued international pressure to ensure the agreed-upon goals are genuinely achieved. “It is time to end this terrible war” he stated, adding that the plan requires the cooperation of Hamas and a reliable implementation by the Netanyahu government.
