Actress Karoline Schuch has a conflicted relationship with her East‑German roots. She told newspapers of the Funke Media Group that everything now feels far more uncertain than during her youth. The upcoming state elections in two East German states fill her with worry, yet she remains hopeful that a good path can be found.
Schuch, who lived in the GDR until age 18, emphasizes the importance of community. “In Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern, for example, I see many small initiatives that foster a sense of togetherness” she said. These encounters make her notice that dissent in society isn’t as widespread as one might think. When she meets people from the East, she often feels a certain, sometimes special, sense of connection. She also wrestles with “East‑German nostalgia” noting that she knows how much injustice occurred in the DDR.
