AfD Ban Debate Sparks Fierce Opposition

Berlin – The conservative CDU/CSU bloc has responded cautiously to a recent resolution passed by the Social Democratic Party (SPD) calling for the preparation of a legal procedure to potentially ban the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

Steffen Bilger, the CDU/CSU’s first parliamentary managing director, stated that current evidence does not appear sufficient to justify such a move. Speaking to the Funke Media Group publications on Monday, Bilger emphasized the substantial legal hurdles involved, referencing the recent Federal Administrative Court ruling which overturned a ban on the “Compact” magazine.

The court’s decision to revoke the ban on “Compact” serves as a precedent, illustrating the high standards required for any future prohibition of a political organization.

Bilger indicated a shared goal with the SPD – to regain the support of AfD’s ten million voters by addressing concrete societal problems. “Frustration cannot be outlawed” he stated, suggesting that focusing on solutions is a more effective strategy than pursuing a ban.

Further discussions on the matter, he added, will be confined to internal coalition negotiations. The remarks signal a pragmatic approach from the CDU/CSU, prioritizing voter engagement and problem-solving over potentially divisive legal action.
