A majority of the AfD faction missed the mourning state protocol for Rita Süssmuth in the Bundestag on Tuesday. While the front row-including party and faction leaders Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla-was occupied, the rows behind quickly thinned. In total, only about 30 of the more than 150 AfD members were present, meaning roughly 80 percent were absent, whereas members from the other parliamentary groups were largely represented. The CDU politician Süssmuth had served as Minister of Family Affairs from 1985 to 1988 and as President of the German Bundestag from 1988 to 1998. She died on 1 February at the age of 88.
