AfD Forms Working Group to Chart Path into State Governments Amid Anticipated Pushback

According to the Monday edition of “Bild”, the AfD’s national executive has set up a “Working Group for Government Participation” to prepare for the possibility of joining coalitions in several German states. The group is planned to include two full‑time positions, one of which will be a qualified lawyer. The internal estimate of its annual costs is about €185,000.

Its main focus will be on the upcoming state elections in Saxony‑Anhalt and Mecklenburg‑Western Pomerania. The new unit will handle personnel planning and strategic development leading up to those polls, as the executive resolution says.

The party’s leaders anticipate significant political and legal pushback from other levels of government and civil‑society actors if the AfD were to take a government role. Therefore, the working group is also charged with analysing potential scenarios and devising protective and defensive strategies to counter such opposition.
