AfD Matches CDU Support in Latest German Poll Amid Voter Confidence Dip

According to a weekly poll conducted by Forsa for the broadcasters RTL and ntv, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) is now on par with the CDU/CSU coalition in terms of voter favorability, both polling at 26 percent. The CDU/CSU leads the polls. Meanwhile, the BSW has fallen below the three percent mark and is therefore no longer listed separately. The polling figures for the Greens (15 percent), the Social Democratic Party (SPD) (12 percent), and Die Linke (10 percent) remained unchanged compared to the previous week. The proportion of non-voters and undecided people stands at 26 percent, which remains significantly higher than the non-voter rate recorded during the last federal election (17.9 percent).

Furthermore, only 20 percent of German citizens (-3 percentage points) are currently satisfied with the work of Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU). This represents the lowest satisfaction rating that Forsa has measured for Merz since he took office. This figure places Merz significantly below the lowest rating recorded for his predecessor, Olaf Scholz, in July 2024, when satisfaction was 23 percent. A clear majority of 78 percent are dissatisfied with Merz’s performance. Even among CDU/CSU supporters, slightly more than half (57 percent) are satisfied with the chancellor’s work.

Regarding the assessment of political competence, the CDU/CSU lost one point, while both the Greens and the AfD gained one point. Based on competence, 16 percent of German citizens trust the CDU/CSU the most, 13 percent trust the AfD, 8 percent trust the Greens, 4 percent trust the SPD, and 3 percent trust Die Linke to handle the country’s problems. Notably, 53 percent of citizens do not trust any single party with political competence.

The survey was carried out by questioning a total of 1,503 people between March 31 and April 2, 2026.
