AI Regulation Delay Looming for Europe

The German federal government is reportedly advocating for a postponement of the European Commission’s implementation of the European AI Act. According to a Friday report in Handelsblatt, citing government sources, the coalition government is responding to increasing concerns from the business sector regarding potential over-regulation and competitive disadvantages stemming from the AI Act.

The government had previously stated its intention to promote a business-friendly national implementation of the European AI regulation, emphasizing streamlined processes and dedicated points of contact for companies.

While the AI Act has been formally adopted, detailed guidelines for businesses – particularly the so-called Code of Practice – are still pending, a senior government official told the newspaper. Consequently, the government is seeking a moratorium on the Act’s implementation.
