The German government has signaled a willingness to offer assistance to the Syrian government, emphasizing a focus on fostering an inclusive political process. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stated on Thursday that the German government, alongside European partners, stands ready to actively support such a process, ensuring representation for all Syrian citizens.
Wadephul underscored the Syrian government’s responsibility to protect its citizens, regardless of religious or ethnic background, from violence. He expressed deep concern over the recent events in southern Syria, particularly the high number of civilian casualties and the attacks on the Druze minority community in the Suweida province, condemning the assaults in the strongest terms and calling for accountability for those responsible.
While acknowledging the current ceasefire as a positive development, the Minister stressed the critical importance of all parties adhering to the agreement and halting all combat actions. He warned against Syria becoming a pawn in regional power struggles.
Further highlighting the fragile security situation, Wadephul addressed the recent Israeli airstrikes, including those targeting Damascus and urged all domestic and international actors to refrain from any actions that could jeopardize Syria’s stability and the ongoing transition process.
