Alaska Summit: Hope for Ukraine Peace Talks Emerges

Following the recent Alaska summit and telephone conversations between U.S. President Donald Trump and European leaders, Jürgen Hardt, foreign policy spokesperson for the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, has expressed cautious optimism.

In comments to the “Rheinische Post” Hardt stated that the meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Selenskyj on Monday holds significant historical weight. He characterized it as a potential turning point that will either be remembered as the beginning of a genuine peace process or as the moment European nations were compelled to act independently.

Hardt highlighted increasing grounds for a positive outlook, referencing statements made by Chancellor Merz and other government leaders suggesting a sustained commitment from Trump towards peace efforts. He specifically noted the perceived willingness of the U.S. to play a guarantor role following any negotiations.

“Europe stands united under the leadership of the Chancellor” Hardt emphasized. “Selenskyj and Trump understand that the Ukrainian president does not speak for himself alone and that Ukraine is not fighting this battle in isolation”.
