Responding to the prospect of a potential reduction in US commitment to NATO, Henning Otte, the Military Representative of the Bundestag (CDU), has demanded immediate planning certainty for the German Armed Forces from Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD).
Otte told the “Rheinische Post” that if the United States significantly scaled back its engagement within the alliance, this would necessitate a push toward designing Europe’s security architecture as a more autonomous entity. He stressed that Germany and its European NATO partners now have an urgent duty to decisively and quickly strengthen their own defense capabilities, essentially by empowering “Europe within NATO”. Accordingly, the Ministry of Defense must rapidly announce its defense positioning so that the Bundeswehr can gain necessary planning certainty. Otte concluded by stating that personnel numbers must increase and capability gaps must be systematically closed.
Similarly, Thomas Röwekamp, Chairman of the Bundestag’s Defense Committee (CDU), voiced concerns about this shift. Röwekamp told the “Rheinische Post” that while the partnership with the United States remains indispensable, the European contribution to collective defense must grow in the future. He argued that a stronger European pillar ultimately enhances the overall stability and credibility of NATO, both in the eyes of its allies and Russia.
