A man convicted of a school shooting in Ansbach, Germany, in 2009 has been apprehended in Colombia, authorities announced on Sunday.
Georg R., who was serving a sentence in a forensic psychiatric facility, failed to return after a sanctioned outing on August 16th. Following his disappearance, prosecutors and police initiated a large-scale search. Investigations led to Colombia, where he was located and detained approximately two weeks after fleeing.
The operation involved specialist investigators from the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office, a liaison officer from the Federal Criminal Police Office and the Colombian police force.
The individual was returned to Germany on Sunday morning and is being transferred to a secure unit within the forensic psychiatric facility in Erlangen. In September 2009, R. injured 13 students and two teachers in a school shooting at an Ansbach school. He was subsequently sentenced in 2010 to a nine-year term of juvenile detention with placement in a psychiatric facility.
