Anti-AfD Protests Rage in Magdeburg as State Parliament Faces Vote for President

Protests were held in Magdeburg ahead of the opening session of the Saxony-Anhalt State Parliament. On Tuesday, several hundred demonstrators gathered on the Domplatz in front of the Landtag and read the Basic Law aloud. Additionally, the Magdeburg Cathedral was illuminated with political messages such as “Never again is now” and “That’s how it started.”

During the first parliamentary session, a Speaker of the State Parliament is set to be elected. With the AfD being the largest faction, they nominated their former parliamentary manager, Tobias Rausch, as a candidate. Since the BSW has agreed to vote for him, the AfD has a strong chance of having its own member elected as the first Speaker of Parliament.
