A patient in Berlin battling Ebola appears to be recovering well, according to Leif Erik Sander, Director of the Clinic for Infectious Diseases and Intensive Care at Charité. Sander made this assessment on Wednesday, following a visit by the Health Minister.
The patient has received a combined antiviral therapy consisting of an antibody preparation and another medication that was developed for Ebola but is officially approved for treating Covid-19. Sander noted that the patient’s progress is “very positive” stating that the patient is “almost back to normal laboratory values”. However, he acknowledged that there is limited clinical experience with the specific virus variant that was identified. “In that regard, we can currently only describe what is happening, and we are very satisfied with the clinical course” Sander explained.
Bundesgesundheitsministerin Nina Warken (CDU), who had visited the Charité to review the situation, expressed satisfaction with the care provided. The Minister commented that the experience demonstrated how well established structures and processes were functioning. She stressed the importance of having appropriate facilities and ensuring they are adequately equipped, even when resources are becoming scarce.
