August Data Signals Increase

Early indicators suggest a slight increase in Germany’s annual inflation rate for August, following a figure of 2.0 percent in July. Initial data released Friday morning from several of Germany’s federal states point towards a modest rise in prices.

In North Rhine-Westphalia, the largest state, inflation remained at 2.0 percent. Bavaria saw a slight increase of 0.2 percentage points to 2.1 percent, while Lower Saxony experienced a rise of 0.3 percentage points to 2.2 percent. Saxony-Anhalt also recorded an increase, moving to 2.6 percent from 2.5 percent the previous month. Baden-Württemberg saw its inflation rate climb to 2.5 percent, up from 2.3 percent.

Berlin and Brandenburg both registered increases of 0.3 percentage points, reaching 2.4 percent and 2.5 percent respectively. Hesse, however, remained unchanged at 2.4 percent.

Based on these early figures, a nationwide inflation rate of between 2.1 and 2.3 percent is anticipated, with a current average of 2.2 percent.

The Federal Statistical Office is scheduled to release its preliminary nationwide inflation estimate later today, typically around 2:00 PM local time. Final figures will be published mid-month, although revisions are infrequent.
