Austria has reaffirmed its support for a joint declaration by 28 nations calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities in Gaza. The declaration, a call for an end to the ongoing conflict, has sparked varied responses internationally.
Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger stated in an interview with “Welt am Sonntag” that Austria stands alongside Israel, expressing understanding for the nation’s struggle against perceived external threats. She emphasized the need to address the situation through a framework that acknowledges Israel’s security concerns.
However, the leader of the Neos liberal party also underscored a critical need for improved humanitarian conditions in Gaza. She insisted that, as a friend of Israel, Austria must convey to the government in Jerusalem that the current humanitarian situation is unsustainable and that adherence to international humanitarian law within Gaza is paramount.
The statement further stressed the vital importance of securing the release of remaining Israeli hostages and dismantling the Hamas organization. Minister Meinl-Reisinger highlighted a perceived opportunity for peace in the region, suggesting that Israel should seize this chance.
Notably, both Germany and the United States have declined to endorse the declaration, triggering internal political debate within the German government. Certain factions within the Social Democratic Party (SPD) have voiced criticism regarding the lack of support for the declaration.
