Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker has issued a forceful rebuke against alleged attempts by US President Donald Trump to exert influence over Austria’s internal affairs. In an interview with “Bild”, Stocker asserted, “Austria decides its own policy” directly responding to a report by “Defense One” that claims a longer version of the US government’s new foreign policy strategy aims to weaken the European Union through leveraging member states like Austria, Poland, Hungary and Italy. The White House has denied the existence of such a detailed document.
A spokesperson for the Austrian Chancellery in Vienna confirmed that while the new US security strategy is acknowledged, any attempts to interfere in internal political matters will be “sharply rejected” and will not be tolerated. The reported strategy has been characterized by Stocker as “a new wake-up call” underlining the urgent need for Europe to “take security into our own hands more than ever before” – advocating for increased investment in defense capabilities, strengthening competitiveness and reducing dependencies.
Stocker’s statement arrives amidst growing tensions regarding transatlantic relations and raises critical questions about the US’s approach to European security and political cohesion. While acknowledging the denial from the White House, the Chancellor’s remarks signal a deepening concern within Austria regarding perceived external pressure aimed at undermining the EU.
Furthermore, Stocker emphatically reaffirmed Austria’s commitment to the European Union, particularly during this year’s anniversary marking 30 years since Austria’s accession. He highlighted the EU’s success in shaping and strengthening Austria, positioning the nation as a “strong, reliable and constructive partner” within the bloc. The declaration serves as a clear signal of Austria’s continued dedication to European integration despite the current diplomatic complexities.
