The Greens rebuffed a proposal from the CDU/CSU coalition that the two leading candidates-Cem Özdemir for the Greens and Manuel Hagel for the CDU-share the position of Minister‑President of Baden‑Württemberg because of the stalemate in the state parliament.
Franziska Brantner, chairwoman of the Greens, said on Monday after her party’s meetings in Berlin that she had, until yesterday, believed the CDU was opposed to a “lifestyle part‑time” arrangement. She clarified that the Greens stand for a full‑time Minister‑President. Brantner also warned that the coalition talks are unlikely to be straightforward.
Earlier, Stuttgart mayor Frank Nopper (CDU) had proposed a power‑sharing arrangement. In an interview with Bild, he noted that there was “no clear winner” and, given the deadlock, “the Greens cannot claim the Minister‑President position on their own”. He argued for a rotational system: in a black‑green or green‑black coalition, the office would alternate between the Greens and the CDU.
