Berlin Brandenburg Airport Cancels Passenger Flights on March 18 Amid Verdi Strike

At Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) no scheduled passenger flights will operate on Wednesday, March 18, according to the airport operator, in response to a warning strike called by the service union Verdi.

The operator has informed its partners-airlines, ground handling companies, security firms and on‑site business operators-of the cancellation. Passengers are urged to contact their airline or travel agent for rebooking or alternative travel arrangements.

Verdi accuses the employer of blocking the current collective bargaining talks. Negotiation leader Holger Rößler said the workers were keeping the airport running day after day and deserve respect and a wage agreement that recognizes their contributions. In the second round of talks, the employers presented an offer that the wage commission dismissed as non‑negotiable. The next bargaining session is scheduled for March 25.

During that second round, the employers proposed a multi‑step salary increase valid until the end of 2028. The plan called for a flat rate until June, then a 1 % increase starting July 2026, a 1.5 % rise from July 2027, and another 1 % from May 2028. Rößler described the proposal as a provocation at the negotiating table.
