Vanessa Emde, a controversial politician from the Berliner Linke party, has rejected demands put forth by the party’s regional executive board that she resign her mandate. Emde announced on Sunday that she intends to continue serving in her current position, stating that mandates achieved democratically are “not open for negotiation.”
The regional board had previously called on Emde to surrender her mandate in the Berlin House of Representatives, citing a lack of trust. This internal pressure comes amid political maneuvering, as representatives from both the SPD and the Greens have made Emde’s removal a prerequisite for potential coalition formation. Additionally, several other Linken politicians are demanding her expulsion from the legislative faction. However, Emde’s supporters have countered that the party leadership is simply capitulating to external pressures.
Emde has faced criticism for some time due to her public positions on Israel. She secured her direct mandate in the Neukölln electoral district during the September election.
