Berlin Mayor Criticises Pro‑Palestine Activists for “Israel Hate” at Berlinale

Berlin’s governing mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) sharply criticized anti‑Israel activists following their remarks at the Berlinale. Speaking to the “Bild”, Wegner said the individuals who portray themselves as pro‑Palestinian activists are not concerned with human rights. “They are not looking for dialogue, peace, or nuanced criticism; they focus only on hatred toward Israel” he added.

The criticism came after a speech by Syrian‑Palestinian director Abdallah Alkhatib, who accused the German federal government of being a “partner in genocide” in the Gaza Strip. Alkhatib’s film “Chronicles from the Siege” had won the award for best feature film debut at the festival.

Wegner claimed the activists had abused the awards ceremony to spread blanket blame, broadcast their hypocrisy, defame democratic institutions and stage moral tribunals. He emphasized that, at the same time, he was standing firmly behind the festival’s leadership. He praised Tricia Tuttle and Wim Wenders for creating a dignified frame for the event and steering the festival with sensitivity, openness, and a willingness to engage in dialogue. Their efforts, he said, are vital to restoring the Berlinale after its recent severe crisis.

“Openly displayed hatred toward Israel directly contradicts what this festival and the city of Berlin stand for-freedom of art, universal human rights, and a clear stance against hate in all its forms” Wegner concluded.
