Berlin SPD Leader Questions Feasibility of Expropriating Housing Giants During Coalition Talks

During the discussions regarding a potential red-green-red coalition, Steffen Krach, the party leader and parliamentary group chief for the SPD in Berlin, has questioned the call for the socialization or expropriation of large housing corporations. Speaking to “Welt,” Krach stated that he believes implementing such a measure is neither legally nor financially feasible, nor is it the quickest way to genuinely solve the existing housing crisis.

Krach maintained that his position has not changed since the pre-election period. This policy disagreement is anticipated to become one of the most challenging tests during the ongoing coalition talks. While admitting that the differences in viewpoint are significant, the SPD politician conceded that “this discussion will not be easy.”

He sharply criticized the advocates of socialization, noting that they have yet to present a credible concept. Krach pressed for details, remarking, “I would also like to know where the concept is. I never saw it during the campaign. All that was on the posters was: ‘Expropriate Deutsche Wohnen.’ What it would cost and what it would bring has never truly been discussed.”

Furthermore, Krach pointed out that the financial repercussions of socializing housing corporations could place additional strain on Berlin’s already strained budget. Addressing the severe necessary budget constraints, the Berlin SPD chief made it clear that any future coalition, regardless of its composition, must implement harsh cuts. “We will have to cut spending in 2027 and 2028 because the money won’t be there. It will hurt,” Krach concluded.
