Berlin States Face Pressure as Mayors Demand Emergency Meeting on Energy Crisis Relief

Having called for extraordinary action concerning the energy price crisis and debates about relief measures, Hamburg’s First Mayor, Peter Tschentscher (SPD), has requested an emergency ministerial conference. Speaking to the “Tagesspiegel” (Saturday edition), Tschentscher stated that the current situation “requires a special Ministerial Conference (MPK) to establish a picture of the situation and discuss necessary measures”.

He emphasized the need for all levels of government to consolidate their information. He noted that the Federal Government departments and the states must pool their data, and that estimates from the Federal Chancellery and the Foreign Office regarding the international conflict situation, energy supply security, and price developments are required. “Furthermore, we must discuss and decide on the impact, financing, and feasibility of concrete measures to combat the gasoline price crisis. Waiting is not an option; Germany must take action” Tschentscher added.

Andreas Bovenschulte, the Mayor of Bremen (SPD), also called for an extraordinary ministerial conference. Dietmar Woidke (SPD), the Minister-President of Brandenburg, similarly urged prompt action, pointing out that “many people and businesses depend on vehicles”. He stressed that “it is essential that the federal government quickly takes steps to alleviate the burden of fuel prices. An windfall tax could be one such possible step”.

Prior to this, Olaf Lies (SPD), the Minister-President of Lower Saxony, and Manuela Schwesig (SPD), the Minister-President of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, had also urged the federal government to act swiftly.
