Berlin Warsaw Border Deal Hangs By Thread

As systematic border checks by Poland at its frontier with Germany prepare to formally commence, the German Police Union (GdP) has voiced hope for a negotiated agreement between the two nations to prevent disruptions in the handling of asylum seekers and migrants.

Andreas Roßkopf, Chairman of the GdP’s Federal Police division, expressed concern to the Funke-Mediengruppe newspapers, highlighting Poland’s repeated dissatisfaction with Germany’s intensified border controls and the rejection of individuals seeking protection. He cautioned against the potential for a “back and forth” movement of migrants, emphasizing the urgency of avoiding a situation where vulnerable individuals are used as political pawns.

Roßkopf indicated ongoing intensive discussions between German and Polish authorities aimed at achieving reasonable outcomes. He stressed the need for the Federal Police to receive clear, binding guidelines regarding when and under what circumstances individuals can be rejected at internal borders, ensuring their subsequent repatriation by neighboring countries. A sense of apprehension is present as the border checks are set to begin on Monday.

Poland’s announced implementation of systematic border controls, some of which began over the weekend, represents a response to Germany’s existing border checks on individuals entering from Poland, a practice that has been intensified by the current German government. The objective is to curb irregular migration. This has frequently resulted in significant traffic congestion at the Polish border, negatively impacting the free movement of people and goods. The newly implemented Polish border controls, initially set to remain in place until August 5th, have the potential to exacerbate this situation.
