Biontech’s facilities in Idar-Oberstein, Tübingen, and Marburg are reportedly facing potential closure. According to reports from SWR and HR on Monday, the company has failed to find a suitable successor or buyer for the sites.
Earlier, in May, Biontech announced plans to cut 1,800 jobs and began a search for buyers for the three locations. That search has apparently concluded without success. The initial intention to sell the works stemmed primarily from the decrease in demand for its COVID-19 vaccines.
The closure would significantly impact employees at each site. Approximately 440 staff are affected at the facility in Idar-Oberstein, where Biontech first opened operations in 2009. In Marburg, the decision affects 540 employees, while the location in Tübingen-which was previously taken over by Curevac-will see around 820 positions impacted.
