The Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Karin Prien, is prioritizing the cultivation of empathy within early childhood and education programs. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” Minister Prien emphasized the fundamental importance of empathy for a thriving society, describing it as the ability to understand perspectives, feelings and the experiences of others – qualities she believes are integral to humanity.
Prien outlined various approaches to fostering empathy in young children, including cooperative play, experiential learning activities and open, supportive communication, both verbal and non-verbal. She highlighted the value of reflective practices, mentoring programs and initiatives focused on conflict resolution and the development of responsibility.
The Minister asserted that learning to tolerate differing opinions and resolve disputes with empathy is crucial for building a cohesive and supportive community. Ultimately, she believes that fostering empathy will enable constructive compromise within democratic societies and promote respectful interactions amongst all members.
