Borussia Dortmund Secures Captain Emre Can With Contract Extension Through 2027 Amid Injury Recovery

Emre Can will stay with Borussia Dortmund for another year, extending his contract until 30 June 2027.
The club announced the extension on Saturday, noting that the captain is a model professional and a true leader who always puts the team first.
Lars Ricken, Dortmund’s sporting director, said that the club has already been clear that it will continue to support Can after his serious injury, because he is a key factor for the side. “Now he needs to focus entirely on his recovery, and we look forward to seeing him back on the pitch” he added.

Can is currently sidelined with an ACL rupture suffered in the February match against Bayern Munich. The injury has ruled him out for several months, and he was reportedly successfully operated on last week. He returned to the first team in January 2020, first on loan from Juventus and then permanently. Since then he has played 220 appearances for Dortmund and won the DFB‑Pokal in 2021. He is expected to rejoin the squad in the next season only after his recovery.

Sports director Sebastian Kehl emphasized that Can is an important presence both on and off the field, noting the experience he brings to the squad. “We will closely support him on his road to recovery and are fully confident he will return in top condition” he said.

Can added, “I’m glad to remain part of Borussia Dortmund. The club is special, and I sincerely thank everyone for their support. My goal is to recover as quickly as possible, return to the field with my teammates, and succeed with the club”.
