Bremen’s Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte (SPD) has called on the Union to present a full financing proposal for expanding the current electricity tax reduction to cover private households and all companies. Reporting his comments to the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland,” Bovenschulte stated that the lowering of the electricity tax for everyone is a necessary good measure, noting, “Since the Federal Chancellor also proposed it, I firmly expect that the Union has a funding plan ready.”
The SPD politician further explained that their party would be willing to implement a windfall tax to help offset the costs of this expansion. However, Bovenschulte criticized the Union, saying, “Unfortunately, that is not something achievable with the Union.” Due to this disagreement, he suggested that the Christian Democrats appear to act as “protectors of the mineral oil conglomerates.”
This demand for broader tax cuts comes after the conference of regional ministers urged the federal government to reduce the electricity tax for everyone last Thursday. It is worth noting that the reduction decided upon this summer was initially restricted only to industry, manufacturing, and agriculture and forestry.
