The Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Brandenburg officially sealed their new coalition just under two months after the collapse of the former SPD‑BSW alliance.
On Monday, in the state parliament in Potsdam, Prime Minister and SPD state leader Dietmar Woidke and CDU state chair Jan Redmann signed the coalition agreement. The SPD had approved it at a state party conference on Saturday, voting overwhelmingly in an open ballot, while CDU members had already expressed clear support in a prior poll.
The new red‑black cabinet, to be sworn in on Wednesday, will feature former BSW minister Robert Crumbach-who has since joined the SPD-as Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Planning. Former interior minister René Wilke will receive a broad portfolio, covering labour, social affairs, health and social cohesion. Former economy minister Daniel Keller will take on the role of finance minister.
Four existing SPD ministers will retain their positions: Chief of the State Chancellery Kathrin Schneider, Justice and Digitalisation Minister Benjamin Grimm, Minister for Science, Research and Culture Manja Schüle, and Minister for Agriculture, Environment and Consumer Protection Hanka Mittelstädt.
At the same time, the CDU will expand its representation in the state government. Apart from Jan Redmann who will serve as interior minister, CSU politician Martina Klement will join as new Minister for Economy, Energy, Climate Protection and Europe. CDU General Secretary Gordon Hoffmann will oversee the education portfolio, taking over the role from current MP Julian Brüning who will act temporarily.
