BSW Launches Online Tool to Simplify Conscientious Objection as Germany Weighs Draft Reinstatement

With a new web application the BSW promotes the refusal of military service. The service went online on Tuesday morning, reports the “Stern”. Users can either run a quick check or submit an application for conscientious objection to war service directly within the app.

The tool is aimed mainly at young men who want to preemptively refuse war duty. Although, because conscription no longer exists, a refusal is not strictly required, the military‑service modernization law that came into force in January obliges all 18‑year‑old men to provide information to the Federal Armed Forces. Starting next July, they could also be required to attend a draft. Critics see this as a possible precursor to a return to conscription.

The BSW app gives a step‑by‑step guide through the objection process and the application’s preparation, including tips on the résumé to submit. It advises that memberships in shooting clubs or an interest in war games should not be mentioned. On the other hand, peaceful martial arts such as Tai Chi could be viewed as “an expression of respect for human life”.

Applicants are also urged to act quickly. Acceptance rates have fallen from 87 % in 2023 to 81 % in 2024. If an objection is declined, the app points out the possibility of filing a lawsuit before an administrative court – “with good chances of success”.

BSW chief Fabio De Masi offered a political rationale for the initiative. He said that the debate over conscription and armament is often driven by a generation “that is no longer affected by it” and that the web app aims to give young people concrete support.
