The BSW is pushing for a recount of the 2025 federal election. The party announced that it will file a lawsuit with the Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe in mid‑February.
FWB federal chair Fabio De Masi said, “After submitting our complaint, the court in Karlsruhe will take the next step”. If a recount is carried out and the BSW finally crosses the 5 % threshold, the party would enter the Bundestag. That would remove Chancellor Merz’s simple majority, forcing him to bring the Greens into a coalition or to build a majority behind a minority government.
In the 2025 election the BSW received 4.981 % of the second votes, falling just short of the 5 % hurdle. The party had previously filed a vote‑challenge with the Bundestag’s Electoral Examination Committee, which was rejected in December. On 9 February, party founder Sahra Wagenknecht will brief the public-alongside chairpersons Amira Mohamed Ali and De Masi-on the current status of the lawsuit.
