Chancellor Friedrich Merz of the CDU stated that he views Bulgaria, even under the leadership of the new Prime Minister Rumen Radew, as a supportive partner for Ukraine. Following a meeting with Radew at the Chancellery, Merz expressed gratitude that Bulgaria is willing to “walk the path of pressure against Russia in European solidarity”. The Chancellor further remarked that the newfound “unity and determination” within Europe, especially since the establishment of the new Hungarian government, will bring the world closer to peace. This assessment comes as Radew has previously been viewed as closely aligned with Moscow, having repeatedly criticized the European Union and its military assistance to Ukraine. However, sources note that Radew has displayed considerable moderation on this subject since his election victory in April.
