The German Federal Minister of the Interior, Alexander Dobrindt, is advocating for enhanced drone defense measures, proposing the deployment of the Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces) to assist police within Germany. Dobrindt emphasized the need for clear legal frameworks to facilitate these operations, stating that enshrining the Bundeswehr’s ability to provide assistance to law enforcement – particularly in drone defense scenarios – within the upcoming Air Security Law would represent a significant advancement in national security architecture.
The minister’s proposals also include the establishment of a centralized German Drone Competency Center. This center, intended to connect federal, state and military entities, aims to consolidate technical expertise and financial resources to counter the growing threat posed by unauthorized drone activity.
Dobrindt highlighted vulnerabilities, citing potential risks to critical infrastructure, civilian populations and large-scale events. While acknowledging successful detection and interception rates of many drones through existing technology, he underscored the need for continuous improvement and adaptation to evolving drone capabilities. He emphasized that ongoing technological development is crucial to maintain a proactive defense.
Furthermore, Dobrindt announced plans for a collaborative research project focusing on drone defense in partnership with Israel. Specific details concerning this initiative remain undisclosed.
