Bürgergeld Names Shocking Trend Michael Tops List

According to a response from the Federal Ministry of Labour to a query posed by the Alternative for Germany (AfD), the most common first names among recipients of Bürgergeld (social assistance) in Germany are Michael, Andreas and Thomas. This information, as reported by the Rheinische Post, reflects data as of June 2025, pertaining to “Jobcenter in gemeinsamer Einrichtung” (jointly operated job centers), according to Parliamentary State Secretary Katja Mast (SPD) at the Ministry of Labour.

The statistics reveal that 19,200 individuals receiving Bürgergeld are named Michael, followed by 16,200 with the name Andreas and 15,700 with the name Thomas. Daniel is the fourth most frequent name, with 14,800 recipients and Olena follows in fifth place with 14,400. Alexander is listed in sixth position with 13,800 recipients.

The list continues with Ahmad (13,700) in seventh place, Ali (13,500) in eighth and Christian (13,400) in ninth. Mohammad is the tenth most common first name, with 12,500 recipients. The ranking concludes with Anna (12,400), Oleksandr (12,000), Tetiana (11,400) and Iryna, who appears in fourteenth place with 10,600 recipients. Mast stated that the data originates from the Federal Employment Agency.
