CDU Criticized for Risky Court Judge Selection

The parliamentary group of the Left party is advocating for the unanimous endorsement of both SPD candidates nominated for the Federal Constitutional Court and proposes allowing a free vote on the candidate put forward by the conservative bloc. Heidi Reichinnek, parliamentary group leader for the Left in the Bundestag, expressed her disappointment to ARD Tagestheumen on Wednesday, stating that prior discussions with the conservative coalition would have been desirable before Thursday’s vote. She suggested that the Union’s refusal to engage in such dialogue risks jeopardizing the election for a second time.

Following a budget debate in the Bundestag, Reichinnek criticized the presented budgetary plan, arguing it lacks provisions demonstrably improving the lives of citizens and rendering their daily expenses manageable. The Left party maintains that cuts to the social welfare system are unacceptable. They advocate for expanding social programs, potentially through measures such as reactivating the wealth tax and addressing loopholes within inheritance tax regulations. Reichinnek indicated that such proposals have previously garnered favorable consideration within the conservative camp.

The Left politician underscored the necessity of increased investment in education. She questioned the prioritization of military spending, which allows for the suspension of debt brake regulations, contrasted with perceived difficulties in securing funding for essential areas like education. Reichinnek defined reform as achieving improvements for the majority of the population.
