CDU Criticizes SPD’s Economic Plan Amid High Fuel Prices, Demands Immediate Action

Speaking to the magazine Focus, CDU-Labour Wing leader Dennis Radtke criticized Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil’s handling of the current crisis. Radtke stated that “the people are already feeling the impact of the Iran war in their wallets”. He insisted that Klingbeil needs to develop concrete policy proposals that can be quickly implemented, ideally with the support of the CDU/CSU bloc.

The European politician specifically warned against any discussion concerning a “super-profit tax”. Radtke dismissed philosophical debates about such a pan-European tax, arguing that in practical terms, it would achieve little. Instead, he urged the government to focus on immediate and direct relief measures that truly help people financially. These necessary actions, according to Radtke, must include a mobility subsidy and a price cap on fuel. He pressed Klingbeil to quickly present plans outlining how these measures could be executed.

Radtke added that half of the population currently has no savings, noting that previous SPD leaders had taken policy considerations into account regarding this precarious situation.
