CDU/CSU Narrowly Ahead of AfD in New Poll Data

Recent polling data indicates shifting support among German voters, with the conservative Union parties (CDU/CSU) experiencing a decline in popularity. A new “Meinungstrend” survey conducted by the Insa Institute, as reported by Bild, places the Union at 26 percent, marking their lowest level of support since late May and a one-point decrease from the previous week.

The Social Democrats (SPD) maintain their position at 14.5 percent. Combined, the Union and SPD now garner 40.5 percent of voter preference, representing a loss of approximately one in ten voters since the last federal election.

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) remains closely behind the Union, holding steady at 25 percent. Smaller gains were recorded for the Green Party (11 percent), the Left Party (10 percent), the BSW (5 percent) and the Free Democratic Party (FDP) at 4 percent.

According to Hermann Binkert, head of the Insa Institute, a significant portion of voters, including those traditionally aligned with the Union and SPD, express dissatisfaction with current government policies across multiple areas.

The Insa-Meinungstrend poll, commissioned by Bild, was conducted between August 15th and 18th, 2025, with a sample size of 2,010 citizens.
