In the dispute over next year’s tax cuts, politicians from the CDU are criticizing the reform draft put forward by Federal Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil (SPD), demanding significantly greater relief and the complete abolition of “cold progression.”
CDU parliamentary member and budget politician Melanie Bernstein told the newspaper “Bild” that failing to even offset inflation in income tax is a weak performance. She criticized the Finance Minister for not having finances well under control. Bernstein demanded that Klingbeil achieve higher savings within the budget to completely eliminate cold progression, stating, “The citizens notice when they are taken advantage of by him.”
According to “Bild,” referencing coalition circles, the complete removal of cold progression was estimated to provide relief funding of up to 8.8 billion euros by 2027. However, Klingbeil’s draft currently only provides for relief amounting to around three billion euros.
Budget politician Yannick Bury (CDU) announced his intention to push through the complete elimination of cold progression in the Bundestag. He called for a fundamental revision of the budget planning. Bury told “Bild” that the coalition agreement stipulated a reduction in income tax midway through the electoral term. He argued that the current plan would not even compensate employees for inflation and would actually increase the tax burden, which must be corrected in parliament.
Bury emphasized that real relief can only be achieved by cutting expenses, making the state smaller, and thoroughly reassessing the budget planning for the coming years in parliament. He stated that there were proposals for where cuts could be made. “The current budget planning is unsustainable,” Bury insisted. “We must revise the budget planning because it is the true brake on relief.”
