CDU Demands: Major Overhaul of Germany’s Citizen’s Income

Following an announcement that he will personally oversee negotiations regarding reforms to Germany’s citizen’s allowance (Bürgergeld), leading figures within the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) have voiced expectations for significant progress.

Gitta Connemann, Chairwoman of the CDU Mittelstand Union (MIT), emphasized the perceived societal divisions caused by the current system. Speaking ahead of the MIT’s federal assembly, where Merz is scheduled to speak and seek re-election, Connemann told “Bild” that the present citizen’s allowance framework is not only straining public finances but also raises concerns regarding fairness. She suggested a sentiment exists among businesses and their employees that existing structures do not adequately reward effort.

Connemann further articulated a concern that those genuinely in need are being treated similarly to individuals who are capable of working yet choose not to. She stated that the present system, as it stands, produces “only losers”. According to her, it is appropriate that the party leader is pushing for a substantial overhaul.

Sebastian Lechner, CDU state chairman of Lower Saxony, echoed this sentiment, stating that Merz’s decision to prioritize the issue of the citizen’s allowance is a positive and necessary development. He argued that meaningful solutions can only be achieved if coalition leaders establish clear direction, moving beyond incremental adjustments. Crucially, Lechner emphasized the need for stability and governmental capacity, achievable only through discreet and high-level political coordination.
