CDU Leader Urges Inclusion of Greens and States in Key Reform Discussions

Nathanael Liminski, the head of the North Rhine-Westphalian State Chancellery for the CDU, has advocated for involving the Green Party in the reform processes planned for the coming months. Speaking to Focus, the state minister noted that the experience with the special fund demonstrated that engaging the Greens was done too late. He stressed that interacting with a major opposition party, which also plays a co-governing role in the states, is vital for fostering positive political culture, particularly when it comes to making reforms. Furthermore, he argued that such engagement should not be restricted only to times when the party is necessary for constitutional amendments or when votes in the Bundesrat are required. Liminski also emphasized the need to bring the state governments into these discussions. He insisted that dialogue must happen “early” and that a shared understanding of the problems within the federal structure is essential. According to the CDU politician, given the dire financial state of municipalities and states, every reform proponent must engage in talks with the state premiers regarding the financial situation.
