Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) has urged his political party to initiate a discussion regarding whether it is sufficiently vocal in soliciting support for Ukraine. Speaking to the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” (Saturday edition), Wadephul stated that the CDU itself could be promoting support for Ukraine more regularly and aggressively, and not just during election campaigns. He added that in Eastern Germany, specifically, there are “many people who are listening and want to discuss with us, whom we can reach and convince.”
Wadephul confirmed that the federal government will not reduce its support for Ukraine until a lasting peace is established. According to the CDU politician, maintaining this level of aid is necessary in Germany’s own interest until a responsible peace agreement is reached.
He anticipates that Russia will face major difficulties in sustaining the war. While this isn’t necessarily related to military operations, Wadephul asserted it applies to the economic strength currently available to Russia. He drew a comparison to the Soviet Union in the late 1980s, predicting that Russia will ultimately fail due to diminishing economic power.
Furthermore, he justified the continuation of aid to Ukraine by stating that Germany must stand by the invaded and victimized party, given its responsibility derived from its past.
