CDU Member of Parliament Thomas Bareiß reportedly faces losing his position on the influential Budget Committee. According to the news magazine “Focus”, which cited the parliamentary group leadership of the CDU/CSU, Bareiß, who was responsible for overseeing the budget of the Ministry of Economics, is facing consequences related to a traffic accident he possibly caused on July 12. Officials are said to be looking at reassigning the 51-year-old soon.
The German prosecutor’s office is currently investigating the CDU politician, who represents the Zollernalb-Sigmaringen district, for preliminary suspicion of negligent endangering of traffic and negligent bodily harm. The suspicion suggests that Bareiß may have consumed synthetic drugs and caused the crash.
Although Bareiß initially announced his desire to take a break after the accident, he has since returned to the Bundestag.
